international companies have executed localization projects, but due
to lack of resource in the industry, projects were not successfully
completed as expected. Those
websites have inherent defects such as:
Poor
Design
The
first job of web localization is to ensure the style in consistence.
The
development of headquarter websites at least lasts for 5 or 6
years. After several revisions, the design and the layout of website
become standardized and modeli zed.
But
the designers of Chinese websites are not as experienced as their
countpart in
headquarters are. It is relatively difficult for local webmasters
to follow headquarter templates. That is why some of Chinese
websites are simply and roughly designed.
Thin
Content
Restricted
by design of web frame work, some Chinese sub-websites contain
only limited information of products and services, and link the
major part of contents to their HQ's web sites. Visiting such websites is just
as reading an English book with Chinese cover. Information does not flow to
China, but stays where it is.
Flat
File Structure
The
file structure of a certain amount of local websites is as flat as
single level, and files are not put into different categories and
folders. Although
it normally occurred in smaller web sites, but just imagine, if HQ
updates some web files, how can webmaster find corresponding Chinese
files among hundreds of files? Even
further, what if HQ updates different files daily?
lack
of synchronization
No
matter how ideal the quality Chinese website is, the Chinese
subsidiaries all face the same trouble, synchronization with HQ. The latest update of some
Chinese web sites was about half year ago, while their HQs update
websites daily. Please
understand that people are tired of listening the same information
for 6 months. Out of dated information makes the website dull.
